FL Firefighters Detail Underwater Rescue

Nov. 17, 2022
Two members of Clearwater Fire & Rescue explain how they pulled a 69-year-old woman from a sinking car.

Just before 10:30 Saturday morning, Clearwater Fire & Rescue received multiple calls advising a vehicle had crashed into a pond.

When Lt. Benjamin McBride arrived on scene, he said the car was almost completely underwater, with only the rear window showing.

McBride told 10 Tampa Bay that he immediately swam out to the vehicle and used a window punch to break a window.

He grabbed the woman by the arm, but the car started to quickly sink.

Luckily Lt. Wade Bishop, who has more than a decade of water rescue experience, was next on scene.

"My second dive attempt, I had to maneuver her to the passenger window that they had already broken and started removing her out at that time," Bishop said. "Lieutenant McBride helped me finish removing her and the three of us swam her to shore."

Medics who had arrived were able to revive the woman.

The whole operation took just 12 minutes.
